Courses

The course of study and syllabi for various degrees of the university shall be submitted by the respective board of studies/Board of faculties to the academic council and the syndicate for approval.Such courses and syllabi shall beome effective from the date of approval by the syndicate or such other date as the syndicate may determine.

BS

Prerequisite qualifications: FSc (Pre-Eng) or equivalent with at least second division (45% marks).
Scheme of studies:

Duration: Eight semesters of 16 weeks each.

M.Sc

Prerequisite qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc.) with Physics from Pakistani University or an equivalent degree from a recognized University.

Scheme of studies:

Duration: Four semesters of 16 weeks each.

Total Credit hours: 60

Scheme of studies:

Duration: Four semesters of 16 weeks each. (2 semesters of course work and two for research work leading to dissertation)

Total Courses: 8 each of 3 credit hours

M. Phil. Dissertation: 26 Credit hours

A: For all M. Phil. students PH-601 (Methods of Mathematical Physics) and PH-602 (Electrodynamics I) will remain compulsory. Total 6 credits.
B: For the remaining 6 courses (18 credits) at least 3 courses must be taken in the area of specialization (namely: Condensed Matter Physics, High Energy/Particle Physics, Quantum Optics/Quantum Information Theory, Plasma Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics). The department will specify the list of courses for each specialization.

Ph.D

Prerequisite qualification:

M. Phil degree in Physics from a Pakistani University or an equivalent degree from a recognized University. A college/university teacher or a member of research staff of a research organization holding a Master’s degree in Physics, who has shown undoubted promise for research, may also be considered for admission. These candidates will, however, be required to complete the course work of 24 credit hours.

Duration: Three Years

Total Courses: 6 each of 3 credit hours

Total Credit Requirement: 18

A: For all Ph.D students PH-603 Advanced Quantum Mechanics and PH-616 Statistical Physics will be compulsory. (6 credit hours)

B: Students who have not had the equivalent of PH-601 and PH-602 at the M. Phil. level would be required to take these two courses as well.

C: For the remaining 12 credit hours the student will be required to select at least 3 courses (9 credit hours) from the approved list of courses for his/her research area. The student may be allowed to select one course may be selected from outside this area of specialization on the advice of the supervisor. These courses shall be from the list of approved M. Phil. /PhD courses.
